Abbesses Metro Station
You will find the entrance to the Abbesses metro station at the base of Montmartre Hill, in the 'Place des Abbesses', not far from Sacré-Cœur Basilica. It's a highly tourist-friendly area, making the station a key entry point for visitors heading up the hill to explore Montmartre, one of Paris's most iconic and artistic neighbourhoods. The station entrance, was designed by Hector Guimard who is the most famous exponent of the Art Nouveau style in France. He won a competition in 1900 to design the new metro entrances of the city . His designs employed the organic sinuous lines of the international Art Nouveau design movement which contributes to the station's historical charm.
One of the more notable aspects of Abbesses is that it’s located quite deep underground, which means there are a lot of stairs to descend to reach the platforms. In fact, it's one of the deepest stations in the Paris Métro system, with a 36-meter (118 ft) depth. This can be a bit of a challenge for people with mobility issues, though there is an elevator to assist those who need it. if you are fit you can use what feels like an never-ending staircase with the compensation of viewing a series of wall murals as you go.
Abbesses is on line 12 of the Paris Metro system
