The Luxembourg Palace and Gardens

Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the most famous gardens in Paris, known for its fountains, tree-lined promenades, Luxembourg Palace, and formal French landscaping it was created for Marie de’ Medici in the early 17th century around the Luxembourg Palace, which today houses the French Senate.
The gardens combine formal French layouts with more informal areas of lawns, trees, and shaded walks. Often referred to in English as the Luxembourg Gardens, the park is one of the most visited green spaces on the Left Bank.

The Grand Basin

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont Paris in the 12th arrondissement of Paris
At the centre of the gardens is the large octagonal basin, one of the most recognisable features of the Jardin du Luxembourg.
Visitors often gather here to relax beside the water, while children sail traditional model boats across the basin during the warmer months.Close to the Grand Basin, you’ll find 20 elegant statues called the “Serie des Reines et Femmes Illustres”, featuring the Queens of France and other important women from the history of France.

Tree-Lined Walks and Statues

The gardens are known for their broad promenades lined with chestnut trees, flowerbeds, and numerous statues of historical figures and queens of France.
The shaded paths and orderly layout give the park a calm and elegant atmosphere.

The Medici Fountain

One of the most popular areas of the gardens is the Medici Fountain, a long ornamental fountain set beneath trees on the quieter side of the park.
Its reflections, statues, and surrounding greenery make it one of the most photographed parts of the Jardin du Luxembourg.

A Traditional Paris Garden

Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the most elegant and historic parks in Paris, combining formal gardens with some of the city’s best-known fountains, promenades, and public spaces.
Its central Left Bank location and relaxed atmosphere make it popular with both visitors and Parisians throughout the year.

Why Visit Jardin du Luxembourg

Unlike the more dramatic landscapes of parks such as Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, the Jardin du Luxembourg reflects the formal style of traditional Paris gardens.
Its terraces, gravel paths, trimmed trees and symmetrical design create an atmosphere that has changed little over the years.
