The land was formerly a gypsum quarry, garbage dump, and even the site of the infamous Montfaucon gallows. In just three years, it was transformed into this imaginative English-style landscape garden for the 1867 Universal Exposition.
The Lake and Temple de la SibylleThe centerpiece is a large artificial lake surrounding a rocky island. At the top stands the elegant Temple de la Sibylle (built in 1869), a miniature version of the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. A long suspension bridge leads to the island, offering stunning panoramic views.
Please note: Access to the Island and the Temple of the Sibyl and to the waterfalls, is closed and prohibited due to unstable ground and the risk of landslides.
