Parc des Buttes-Chaumont: The Most Dramatic Park in Paris

A wild, romantic landscape with cliffs, a lake, and one of the best views in the city
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is one of the most spectacular and original parks in Paris. Located in the 19th arrondissement, this 25-hectare green space features steep cliffs, rocky outcrops, waterfalls, a large lake, and a charming temple perched on an island — all dramatically different from the formal gardens of central Paris.

From Quarry to Romantic Park

Built between 1864 and 1867 under Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann, the park was designed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand. The land was formerly a gypsum quarry, garbage dump, and even the site of the infamous Montfaucon gallows. In just three years, it was transformed into this imaginative English-style landscape garden for the 1867 Universal Exposition.

The Lake and Temple de la Sibylle

The centerpiece is a large artificial lake surrounding a rocky island. At the top stands the elegant Temple de la Sibylle (built in 1869), a miniature version of the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. A long suspension bridge leads to the island, offering stunning panoramic views.
Please note:
Access to the Island and the Temple of the Sibyl and to the waterfalls, is closed and prohibited due to unstable ground and the risk of landslides.
