The Opera Garnier has been the sumptuous showcase for major opera and ballet productions within the city of Paris since 1875.
However you don't have to take in a performance to appreciate its grandeur as the building itself is a major attraction.
The gloriously dramatic marble 'Grand Staircase' which leads from the foyer to the auditorium and the grand foyer are outrageously opulent. You can just see the ladies of Paris vying for position as the paraded here in days gone by. The foyer would not be out of place as a gallery in one of the country's grandest chateaux.
We have only visited the equally elegant auditorium during rehearsals but can just imagine the spectacular performances they must put on here.
You get a great the view of the of the building and beyond, from the rooftop terrace of Galeries Lafayette.
